Hello, I'm Debbie Russ with the BBC News.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden have traded personal insults in an acrimonious, first televised presidential election debate. Frequently talking over each other, they tried to score hits over the coronavirus pandemic, the economy, race, crime and climate change. Commentators say undecided voters will have learned little to sway them. Nomia Iqbal is in Washington. We expect it to be war-like, as we've all seen, Donald Trump's style, he's quick, he's furious, gets personal. The bar was set really low for Joe Biden, even in the hours leading up to the debate. The campaign team are calling him senile, saying he needed performance enhancing drugs. And he skipped over that low bar. And overall, Trump still wants to portray himself as this outsider, but he's got a 4-year record to defend now, especially in coronavirus, which is what Joe Biden pushed him on. Trump's response that he's been in politics for years, Biden's been in 47 years, that does not solve the country's problem.

Fighting appears to be continuing between Azerbaijani and Armenian forces over the disputed territory of Nagorno Karabakh, despite a call by the UN Security Council for an immediate end to clashes. Our Caucasus correspondent Rayhan Demytrie reports. Azerbaijan Ministry of Defence said Armenian artillery targeted the city of Terter outside the conflict zone, injuring civilians and damaging infrastructure. Armenia says it shot two combat drones overnight, over Stepanakert, the regional capital of disputed Nagorno Karabakh. On Tuesday, both leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan appeared live on Russian television following Armenian's claims that a Turkish F16 fighter jet had downed one of its warplanes.

A court in India has acquitted senior leaders of the governing BJP including the country's former Home Minister, L. K. Advani, who were accused of inciting a mob to demolish a historic mosque in the town of Ayodhya 28 years ago. The court said the demolition was not planned. Zubair Ahmed reports from Delhi. L. K. Advani was one of the party and other parties' most prominent faces before the rise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He is now 92 and is less active in politics. Mr. Advani heard the verdict at home over a live video link from the court. His campaign in the early 90s to build a Ram temple in the holy city of Ayodhya had galvanized political support for right wing Hindu parties. Many Hindus believe the mosque was built on the ruins of a temple for lord Rama, who is a revered deity. Last year, the Indian supreme court gave the site to Hindus.

The former chief executive of the German carmaker Audi is being tried in Munich over his role in the diesel emission scandal that engulfed its parent company Volkswagen in 2015. Rupert Stadler faces charges of fraud.
