Hello, I am Melissa Long here at the cnn Center in Atlanta. It is Friday, August 3rd. And here's a look at some of the stories that are making news.

The painstaking and dangerous work of recovering victims from the Minneapolis bridge collapse is now in day 3. At least 5 people died in the disaster. 8 people are listed as missing. The Hennepin County Sheriff says conditions are even more treacherous for search teams probing the debris in the Mississippi River today.

More recommendations of the 9-11 commission are now law. President Bush signed the measure this morning. It was part of the first 100 hours agenda passed by the Democratic majority in the House. It provides more money for anti-terrorism programs in major cities and requires additional screening of cargo entering the country on airplanes and ships.

In Montana, the 31,000-acre merry weather fire has changed course. That means some residents north of Helena are being allowed to return home, even though the fire is only about 10% contained. Another fire, southeast of Missoula is keeping residents away. Less intense fires are burning near Augusta and Glacier National Park.

United Nations calls the worst flooding in memory in parts of South Asia. Some 20 million people are living in misery, because of the heavy monsoon rains. Bangladesh and India are taking the brunt of the rains. Some people flooded from their homes were stranded on rooftops and even in trees. And they have no food, clean drinking water and also lack healthcare after clinics were washed away.

The terrorism suspect who was critically burned in an attempted bomb attack at Glasgow's Airport has died. Kafeel Ahmed was one of two occupants of that jeep that rammed into the airport and burst into flames. Three other men are still in custody for the attack in the two failed car bombings in London.

You are now up-to-date on some of the major stories happening on this Friday. And be sure to stick with cnn.com 24/7 for news from all around the world, and of course we'll have updates for you right here throughout the day.
