BERLIN, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Bayern Munich whitewashed defending champion Werder Bremen 4-0 at the German Cup final in front of 72,954 spectators at Berlin Olympia stadium on Saturday night.

The German Cup is the second title for the Bavarians after winning this season's Bundesliga. The squad therefore has the possibility of winning the triple with a victory over Inter Milan at Champions League final for the first time in the club history.

Bayern took the initiative from the start while Werder Bremen lurked for counter attacks.

Bayern and Bremen had good scoring opportunities but it was Bayern that opened the scoring with assistance of Bremen defender Per Mertesacker who played handball inside penalty area with 34 minutes into first half.

Arjen Robben converted the penalty unstoppable with a hammer into bottom right to give Bayern the 1-0 lead on the scoreboards.

With the start of the second half only Bremen substitute striker Hugo Almeida catered for some dangerous scoring opportunities, while Bayern retracted.

Bayern turned up and punished the poor chance conversion by Bremen and doubled the lead at the 51st minute through striker Ivica Olic who poked the ball home after a corner by Robben.

Bremen was unable to put up some resistance, so that Bayern pilled on the pressure. Midfielder Franck Ribery tripled the lead after a counter introduced by midfielder Mark van Bommel with 18 minutes into second half.

Bremen midfielder and captain Thorsten Frings was sent off after he booked his second yellow for repeated foul play. With seven minutes remaining, Sebastian Schweinsteiger marked the final 4-0 score to seal the victory for Bayern, which earned its 15th German cup.

Bayern will face Inter Milan on May 22 in the Champions League final.
