NICOSIA, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk defeated Cyprus's Athletic Football Club of Greeks of Nicosia (Apoel) by 2-0 in the last competition of Group G of European Champions League held in Nicosia on Tuesday night.
But the defeat of Apoel will not affect its number one position in Group G with Porto of Portugal and Zenit Saint Petersburg of the same group had a draw in their last group competition.
The competition started at 21:45 local time (19:45 GMT) in GSP stadium in Cyprus's capital Nicosia. More than 23,000 people watched the game on site. Most of the people came to show their support for Apoel. But many Apoel's fans left the stadium before the game was over after their team lost 2 goals in the second half.
Apoel's performance in Group G competitions is historic. It has become the first football club in Cyprus to be qualified in the second round of European Champions League.
