MADRID, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The draw was made this Monday for the quarter-finals of Spanish basketball's Copa del Rey knockout competition.

The competition is played between the top eight sides in the ACB Endessa basketball league at the midway point of the season and this year's Copa is to be held in Barcelona's Palau San Jordi over four days from February 16 to 19.

Last weekend saw the final places in the Copa decided with Lagun Aro and Fuenlabrada securing dramatic wins to take their places alongside Real Madrid, Regal Barcelona, Unicaja Malaga, Caja Laboral, Lucentum Alicante and Cajasol Sevilla in the Cup.

The draw, which was held on midday on Monday decides the quarter-final pairings and then the semi-finals. It is split into two halves on a seeding system, which means that Madrid and Barcelona, who are first and second in the ACB league cannot meet until the final.

Madrid face Fuenlabrada in the quarter-final with the winner of that game playing either Unicaja Malaga or Banca Civica Sevilla in the semi-final. The Unicaja-Banca Civica match is an Andalusia derby which should add extra spice to the affair, if any were needed

The other half of the draw pits Barcelona against Lucentum Alicante and also sees a derby as Basque sides, Caja Laboral (Vitoria) and Lagun Aro (San Sebastian), who sealed their place in a dramatic win in Murcia.

The four quarter-finals will be played on February 16 and 17, the semi-final on 18 and the final is held on Sunday February 19.
