Asked by reporters whether the 2010 target of concluding the Round set by G20 leaders is still doable, Lamy said it was " technically feasible." But he added that "it wasn't a technical orientation. It was a political orientation."
The Doha Round, launched in the Qatari capital in 2001 with a mandate to help poor countries prosper through more trade, has missed quite a few deadlines for conclusion because of sharp differences among major WTO members in the fields of agricultural trade and industrial market access.
Technical discussions have continued since July 2008, when a mini-ministerial meeting failed to make any breakthrough, but till now no substantial progress has been made.
