WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Senate on Thursday approved President Barack Obama's nomination of James Clapper to be the director of national intelligence (DNI).

The Senate confirmed Clapper late Thursday with a voice vote in which lawmakers voice their "unanimous consent." The Senate is due to begin the summer recess next week.

Clapper will be the fourth director of national intelligence since the position was created in 2005, overseeing 16 spy agencies in the intelligence community.

Serving as undersecretary of defense for intelligence, Clapper was tapped by Obama in June to fill the vacancy left by Dennis Blair, who resigned after a 16-months tenure marred by a series of intelligence blunders and in-fighting.

In the confirmation hearing, Clapper told senators that intelligence is a team effort and the DNI is in a unique position to ensure that. He was backed by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence with a 15-0 vote.
