NEW YORK, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- The man convicted of an attempted car bomb attack in New York's Times Square was sentenced to life in prison Tuesday in Manhattan Federal Court.

Faisal Shahzad, the Pakistani-born American who admitted to leave a homemade car bomb in Times Square, pleaded guilty in June to 10 weapons and terrorism charges.

After he was sentenced, Shahzad said his sentence "will only be for the limit God has for me in this world."

"It's only right that Faisal Shahzad forfeit his freedom for life after trying to forfeit the lives of innocent New Yorkers forever," NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly said in a statement following the sentencing.

Charges against Shahzad included attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, conspiracy and attempt to commit international terrorism, among others, authorities have said.

As part of their sentencing submission, prosecutors submitted a video of a controlled explosion conducted by the Joint Terrorism Task Force of a bomb similar to Shahzad's in order to measure its explosive effects.

At a hearing last week, prosecutors also showed video made by the FBI of a detonation of a similar explosive, to display how destructive it might have been with the proper materials. Prosecutors say it could have killed dozens of people.

Shahzad's bomb in his sports utility vehicle did not go off as planned, because of faulty wiring and low-grade fertilizer. Shahzad was arrested two days later, after being caught boarding a plane bound for Dubai at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

He said the Taliban in Pakistan provided him with more than 15,000 U.S. dollars and explosives training before his botched attack.

Prosecutors say he has not shown any remorse for his actions. While pleading guilty, Shahzad proclaimed that more attacks would come.

Shahzad told investigators he considered Rockefeller Center, Grand Central Station, the World Financial Center as other targets.
