THE weather is getting cold. Use the words and phrases below to describe a cold winter.
  1. nippy: 寒冷的
An informal word meaning “very cold”. For example:
  It’s very nippy today. (今天非常冷。)
  2. biting: 刺骨的
Causing a stinging (刺痛的) sensation – very cold and unpleasant. For example:
A biting, cold wind blew in last Sunday, and temperatures dropped sharply. (上周日开始刮起刺骨的寒风,气温也大幅下降。)
  3. arctic: 极冷的,严寒的
When weather conditions seem so extreme they can be described as “arctic”, as around the North Pole. For example:
TV pictures showed the arctic conditions. (电视画面显示了严寒的环境。)
  4. be as cold as ice: 冷若冰霜
The phrase is usually used to describe a person. The expression has two meanings. If someone is physically cold and you know it from touching his or her body, you can say, “You’re as cold as ice”. You can also use the expression to say that someone is emotionally cold, or emotionless. For example:
He never shows any feelings. He is as cold as ice. (他为人冷漠,从不表露感情。)
  5. be chilled to the bone/marrow: 冻僵了
Extremely or bitterly cold. For example:
Let’s go home, I’m chilled to the bone. (咱们回家吧,我快冻僵了。)
