The oldest woman to climb Mount Everest, the 73-year-old Japanese Tamae Watanabe, has been presented with her Guinness World Record certificate. Watanabe reached the summit of the mountain last weekend, beating her own age record for an Everest climb by a woman. That was set 10 years ago.

The feat was all the more remarkable as she managed to do so after recovering from an accident in 2005 when she broke her back. Watanabe reached the summit from the Tibetan side on May 19, at the age of 73.

That day, more than 200 climbers were aiming for the summit on the busier southern route in Nepal. The oldest climber to reach the top of Everest is 76-year-old Min Baha-dur Sher-chan of Nepal.
