ground除了解作地面、土地之外，还有许多比喻意义上的（figurative）解释，包括「根据」、「理由」 （"on the grounds of..." 即「以……为理由」，"groundless" 即「没有根据的」）、「知识领域」（"the course covers a lot of ground" 即「课程涵盖范围很广」）等等。
谈特首选战，可以用到不少和ground相关的idioms（惯用语）。譬如说﹕we hope that the new chief executive will break new ground and lead hong kong effectively in facing challenges in the next decade." break new ground 即「开创新猷」。groundbreaking 形容具开创性的事物，如﹕the west kowloon cultural district project is groundbreaking in terms of its scale and variety of facilities.
ground其中一义是「场地」。beaten on one's home ground源自球赛，解作「主场失利」，同义说法为beaten on one's home turf。如果一个候选人在自己地盘被击败，我们可以说﹕so-and-so （某某） is beaten on his/ her home ground.
