英语文摘:"Tomorrowland" tops North America box office

LOS ANGELES, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The latest Disney release " Tomorrowland" beat out "Pitch Perfect 2" at this Memorial Day weekend to take the first place with an estimated 32.2 million U.S. dollars for the three-day time frame.

Tomorrowland, which debuted Friday, would rake in an estimated mediocre 40.7 million dollars for the four-day period. The Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States and is observed across the country on May 25, 2015.

The action/adventure movie "Tomorrowland," directed by two-time Oscar winner Brad Bird, was screened at 3,972 locations in United States and Canada. Starring Oscar winner George Clooney and young actress Britt Robertson, the film is about an inventor (Clooney) takes along an energetic teen (Robertson) to an alternate world called "Tomorrowland."

As the Disney's latest theme park-based film, "Tomorrowland" received a so-so 49 percent in Rotten Tomatoes fresh rating and a "B" grade from first-night moviegoers. The audience breakdown for the film split near even in audience genders. Over 60 percent of the audience were adults and families were about 30 percent of all viewers.

Universal's musical comedy "Pitch Perfect 2," winner of last weekend's box office, dropped to the second place this weekend, with 30.3 million dollars in a three-day time frame, declining 56 percent, and an estimated 37.9 million dollars in a four-day frame. "Pitch Perfect 2" has grossed 117.8 million dollars in the first ten days.

The third came George Miller's action film "Mad Max: Fury Road, " which took 23.9 million dollars in the three-day weekend and would gross 87.3 million dollars in total through this Sunday.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies in the U.S. and Canada this weekend were "Poltergeist" (23 million dollars), "Avengers: Age Of Ultron" (20.9 million), "Hot Pursuit" (3.5 million), "Far From The Madding Crowd" (2.9 million), "Furious 7" (2.1 million), "Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2" (1.8 million) and "Home" (1.7 million).
