BEIJING, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Zhang Dejiang called for comprehensive implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development on Tuesday.
Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), made the remarks when holding talks with Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Saber Chowdhury in Beijing.
The 2030 Agenda, outlining goals to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030, was adopted by world leaders at the UN development summit in September.
China's 13th five-year plan, which was approved at the Fifth Plenary Session of the 18th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, has pointed out that China will actively participate in the 2030 Agenda, said Zhang.
China supports the IPU prioritizing the implementation of the new development agenda, he said, adding that China will work with the international society, including the IPU, to achieve the goals set in the agenda.
Zhang said emphasis should be placed on issues concerning people's livelihood, such as poverty, health and education, when carrying out the agenda.
He also called for reinforcement of dialogues between the developed and developing world as well as the promotion of cooperation among developing countries, so as to guarantee the realization of the new agenda.
Chowdhury thanked China for its support to IPU's work and its important contribution to the success of the Fourth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament from Aug. 30 to Sept. 2.
The IPU will strengthen cooperation with the NPC to push forward the implementation of the new development agenda, he said.
The IPU, established in 1889, is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and cooperation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy, according to the PU website.
