BERLIN, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- German record champion Bayern Munich defeated second division side Regensburg 4-0 owing to the brace by striker Mario Mandzukic at the first round of German Cup (DFB Pokal) on Monday.
Jupp Heynckes men avenged last season's hammering 5-2 loss at DFB Cup final against Dortmund, following a 4-0 win over local rival Regensburg to advance into second round.
The Bavarians did not show any weakness considering that, already six Bundesliga teams were eliminated from the cup by lower league sides.
However, the German record champion needed some time to find their rhythm due to Regensburg well-organized defence.
As the match progressed Bayern Munich boosted their offensive efforts to open the scoring at the 31st minute. Frenchman midfielder Franck Ribery dribbled into the penalty area to assist new arrival striker Mario Mandzukic, who slotted home from close range.
After the break Bayern new arrival, and substitute midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri doubled the lead when he curled a dead ball from 20 meters into top right.
The 2-0 deficit took the wind out of Regensburg's sails thus Mario Mandzukic exploited a Shaqiri assist to seal his brace, from sharp angle into the open goal, at the 80th minute.
Bayern had not enough as striker substitute Claudio Pizzaro volleyed home the final 4-0 score, following a fast build up by Shaqiri, eight minutes later.
"At the first half Regensburg defended skillfully whereas in the second half we played better to win the match 4-0," Bayern coach Jupp Henyckes said.
At the other matches on Monday, Chemnitz lost 3-0 to Dresden; Union Berlin sealed a 1-0 win at extra time and Sandhausen defeated Cottbus 3-0.
