EDINBURGH, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- A total of six gold medals have been unveiled on the first day of the second round of the ongoing 2012-2013 International Cycling Union (UCI) Track Cycling World Cup in Glasgow, Scotland.
During the final sessions held at the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome on Friday night, Britain won two gold medals in the respective Women's team sprint and Women's team pursuit, with Spain, France, and Australia, Belarus separately attaining the silver and bronze medals in the above two event.
In the Women's team sprint, Jess Varnish and Becky James won Britain's first gold, riding a great race to take gold against Spain in a time of 33.428. This was the second World Cup win for the pair who took gold in the first round in Cali, Columbia last month and are already proving themselves on the road to Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
In the Women's team pursuit, the race was a closely fought in the early stages but Britain started to pull away at the later stages, gaining a narrow lead over their rivals. The British trio consists of two of the Olympic gold medal winners Laura Trott and Dani King, alongside 18-year-old British Cycling Olympic Academy Programme rider Elinor Barker.
Denmark took gold in the Men's team pursuit with a time of 4:01.289, beating Germany convincingly to win the first gold medal of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Glasgow, while Belgium gained the bronze medal.
Germany won Gold in the Men's team sprint, beating Britain in the final, while France achieved bronze. In the new-look British team, Ed Clancy filled the place of Sir Chris Hoy, who led the British team to won the 2012 Olympic Champions in this category.
The Women's 500m time trial race saw Belarus' Olga Panarina take gold, with Germany's Kristina Vogel taking silver and Spain's Tania Calvo Barbero gaining bronze.
In the Men's scratch race, Tristan Marguet from Switzerland won the gold, while Martyn Irvine from Ireland was hugely committed through the entire race and was rewarded with silver and the bronze medal place went to Roy Eefting of the Netherlands.
The three-day event attracted 207 athletes from 37 countries and regions in total, which is the first time that the UCI Track Cycling World Cup comes to Scotland.
